Werner Hink was born in Vienna in 1943 and started his first violin lessons at the age of six at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna. After graduating from high school, he started his studies with Franz Samohyl in 1962 at the Vienna Music Academy (University of Music and Performing Arts). In 1964, he was accepted into the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and in 1965, he was confirmed as member of the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1968, he was appointed section leader and became concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1974. He held this position until his retirement in 2008. During this time, he worked closely with all important conductors, such as Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado, Maris Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel and others.

In 1964, he founded the Vienna String Quartet with members of the Vienna Philharmonic. They were invited regularly by the Vienna Musikverein to perform in various chamber music formations and played concerts all over Europe, the United States and Japan until 2018. Numerous chamber music recordings were produced during this time, including a complete recording of all string quartets by Franz Schubert. He was also Primarius of the Vienna Octet, concertmaster of the Vienna Court Music Ensemble and was invited regularly to perform at the festival Carinthischer Sommer. From 1982 to 2009 he held a professorship at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

From 2008/09-2023 he held the position of Head of Strings of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and was tutor of the GMJO’s violin section for many projects. He is also a board member of the GMJO.
