Karin Berger, Member of the Advisory Board

"“I am always very pleased to recognize familiar faces at concerts of the Berlin or Vienna Philharmonic or the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. I know them from the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, in my opinion the best and most renowned pool of talent for European orchestral musicians to hone their talent.

There is no better way for young and highly talented musicians to start their professional life than to be part of the GMJO! And that is why I am involved in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester."

The GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER plays a special role in fostering the musical talents of young people. Through the honorary contribution of founder and music director Claudio Abbado as well as of other renowned conductors, the orchestra has been able to meet the highest artistic standards.

But in order to continue bringing musicians from all parts of Europe together in the future, the Orchestra is in urgent need of further financial help. Working with the GMJO costs money, which is needed for the expensive travels of a pan-European orchestra.

The funds are exclusively for the benefit of the young musicians, as music director Claudio Abbado and most of the conductors and soloists donate their fees.

In order to free the orchestra from at least part of the burden and risk of annual fund raising, a beneficiary foundation has been created for the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER. The Beneficiary Foundation of the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER is a foundation without legal capacity based in Essen and recognized by an official notification from the Essen tax authorities (November 3, 2015) as a charity on the basis of promotion of cultural goods.

Contributions to the foundation are tax deductible. The foundation is a private initiative and is financed by donations from individuals, foundations and corporate sponsors.

There are three main types of contribution:

  • Donations
  • Endowment contributions
  • Grants from public and private funding organizations

The foundation also assists the GMJO in setting up sponsoring partnerships. The management will be happy to answer any enquiries.

All Donators

  • receive a contribution receipt that is valid for submission to the tax authorities
  • are entered into a file of contributors and are regularly informed about the orchestra's projects

Donators who donate over € 250

  • are mentioned by name in the tour programme

Donators who donate over € 2,500

  • receive the title of “Patron of the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER”
  • are mentioned under this heading in the tour programme
  • have the opportunity to visit a rehearsal or dress rehearsal
  • can be invited to a reception on the occasion of a concert
  • can receive a signed tour programme in advance
  • have the opportunity to accompany the orchestra on a tour

Donators who support the orchestra with regular donations of € 250 (individuals) and € 1,000 (corporate sponsors)

  • become members of the foundation's Circle of Friends
  • as an exclusive circle of personal friends of the orchestra, receive frequent updates on the orchestra's activities
  • receive documentation about the orchestra's projects

The GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER is appointed "Ambassador UNICEF Austria" on the occasion of its 25th anniversary

The Austrian National Committee for UNICEF was founded in 1962, and in 1987 the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER toured for the first time. In 2012, UNICEF and the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER will start a cooperation: the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER feels honoured to be appointed “Ambassador UNICEF Austria” and to support equal opportunities for all children and young people.

Dr. Gudrun Berger, Managing Director of the Austrian Committee for UNICEF, comments on the newly established collaboration: “We are happy to welcome the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER as “Ambassador UNICEF Austria”. Since its foundation, the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER supported the principle of equal opportunities for children and young people across existing boundaries. We are looking forward to working jointly on the prevention of discrimination and the realization of equal rights.”

From its very beginnings, UNICEF has advocated children’s rights to health care access, education and equal opportunities, safe water, nutrition, and protection from exploitation. The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester will support UNICEF in its mission:

“The GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER is proud to be appointed “Ambassador UNICEF Austria” and to support UNICEF in its mission. Apart from its artistic and political legacy – in the early stages, it helped to overcome existing and apparently insurmountable barriers – , the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER was and is committed to equal opportunities and free access to education and profession. Therefore it is an important task and a great honour to establish a cooperation with UNICEF and to commit ourselves to equal opportunities for all children and young people.” (Alexander Meraviglia-Crivelli, Secretary General of the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER)

The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester follows the guidelines directed to cultural institutions for sponsoring and other sources of income from third parties, issued by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport of the Republic of Austria (BMKOES).
